The Best Treatments for Your Acne
Your face is the focal point of you. It’s where you express your emotions and where other people gaze when they’re speaking to you. Unfortunately, acne is commonly found on the face.
Do you wish you could hide from the world during your breakouts? If you’re one of the 50 million Americans living with acne, know you can do something to banish acne for good.
Many people with acne have tried store-bought products only to find that they do little to change their skin. At Dadeland Dermatology, located in Kendall, Florida, we provide a variety of acne treatments that actually work so you can have clear skin again.
Salicylic Acid
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. People with acne have skin cells that multiply rapidly and tend to clump together. The result is bumpy, raised skin in the form of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.
David Rodriguez, MD may suggest salicylic acid if you have a mild case of acne. It’s a great starting point for acne treatment because of its safe use and minimal side effects. Salicylic acid works to dislodge skin cells that contribute to clogged pores.
Salicylic acid may come in these forms:
- Gel
- Ointment
- Lotion
- Soap
- Solution
- Pads
While many acne-clearing products irritate the skin, salicylic acid soothes the skin and is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Light therapy
Light therapy can clear up acne for cases that have been resistant to creams and prescriptions. The effectiveness of light therapy is reason enough to try it — approximately 70% of acne is cleared in 8 to 10 blue light therapy sessions.
Light therapy uses red or blue wavelengths of light to clear up acne. No harmful ultraviolet rays are used, so you don’t have to worry about causing damage to your skin or increasing your cancer risk.
Radiating these light wavelengths on your skin creates toxic substances that kill bacteria. Light therapy also reduces the size of your oil glands, which minimizes the secretion of pore-clogging oil.
Most patients need weekly treatments for 4-6 weeks to get the results they’re looking for. Maintenance treatments should also be done every couple of months to help sustain your clear, blemish-free skin.
Retinoids
When your hair follicles become plugged, bacteria collects and feeds on the surplus of oil. Your body sends white blood cells to the follicle as an effort to fight the bacteria off, but instead, breakouts form. Retinoids are often used to clear up moderate to severe cases of breakouts.
While many products that claim to fight acne start from the surface level, retinoids work more than skin deep. Retinoids are composed of Vitamin A and can be taken orally or used topically. Retinoids settle deep within your pores to help regulate the shedding of skin cells to help prevent breakouts.
Sometimes it can take 2-3 months for you to experience results with retinoids, but it is often worth the wait. It is important to keep using retinoids even once you’ve experienced results to make sure the treatment has run its full course.
